Chip sealing is a road maintenance process used to protect and extend the life of an existing paved road. A layer of liquid asphalt is sprayed onto the road surface, followed by a layer of small stones, called chips. The chips are then rolled into the asphalt to create a durable, weather-resistant surface.
Chip sealing helps seal small cracks, prevent water from entering the pavement, and slow down the deterioration of the road. It is a cost-effective way to maintain roads and extend their useful life before major resurfacing is needed.
Traffic will continue to loosen and move some of the excess stone until the surface is fully settled. Road crews may sweep the roadway as needed to remove excess material. Drivers should reduce their speed, maintain a safe following distance, and avoid sudden braking or sharp turns while traveling through the work area.
The initial dust and loose stone are a normal part of the chip seal process and should decrease as the road is driven on and the surface becomes established. The finished roadway will provide a sealed, durable surface designed to protect the pavement and extend the life of the road.
